Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research

The Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (Norwegian: Norsk institutt for by- og regionforskning, NIBR) is a social science research institute based in Oslo, Norway.

It is a part of the Oslo Centre for Interdisiplinary Environmental and Social Research cooperative umbrella organization. Its purpose is to conduct "studies which promote society's ability to tackle environmental and social development challenges". The current director general of NIBR is dr. polit Hilde Lorentzen.

Departments

Dept. for Housing and Environmental Planning Research

The Department for Housing and Environmental Planning Research studies the Norwegian planning system, and does research devoted to housing, urban development and the location-specific challenges and possibilities. It is headed by Dr. ing Berit Nordahl.

Dept. for International Studies

The Department of International Studies specializes in politics and governance at the international level, and in countries outside Norway. Policy impacts at the regional and local levels are often in focus. This department has its own research blog, the NIBR International Blog, which also occasionally features articles by researchers from the other departments of NIBR. The department is headed by Marit Haug, PhD.

Dept. for Socioeconomic and Territorial Studies

The Department of Socioeconomic and Territorial Studies performs studies and assessments for clients in Norway and abroad, the research is principally of a regional nature. Focus is often on the dynamics of regional growth and development, territorial issues and development in an international comparative perspective. the department is headed by cand. sociolog. Olav Foss.

DEMOS - Dept. for Welfare, Democracy and Governance Research

DEMOS focuses on the public sector, its organisation and management, and how the latter affect political participation, governance, policy making and division of responsibilities and tasks. DEMOS is headed by cand. polit. Trine Monica Myrvold.
